On Education Mnemonics

Acrostics and mnemonics are among the oldest pedagogical tools in the Christian tradition — from the early church's use of ΙΧΘΥΣ (fish) as a compressed confession of faith, to the catechetical structures of the Reformation era. The acrostic format belongs to no single theological tradition. It is a vessel, not a position. TULIP is one way to fill that vessel — but it is not the only way, nor is it the original way. The Order of Light offers UNITY not as a rival system competing on the same decretal terms, but as a retrieval of the older Union-Centered Transformationist Anglican tradition that predates the rigid Calvinist-Arminian controversy and in important respects transcends it. If TULIP has become for you a symbol of cold, mechanical theology, we invite you to set that association aside long enough to consider what the same five letters might look like when the soteriological heart is not a divine decree but a Living Person.

The Golden Chain of Union-Centered Anglicanism

Our identity is not found in a secret list of names, but in a Living Person. The Order of Light retrieves the Union-Centered Transformationist Anglicanism of the English Reformation — the tradition of Cranmer, Davenant, and Edwards — which holds that forensic justification is not the endpoint of salvation but its necessary ground, and that union with Christ is the soteriological heart from which all benefits freely and necessarily flow. We are not merely declared righteous — through union with Christ, we are being made righteous by the Spirit's transforming presence, as the free and necessary fruit of a justification already complete and irrevocable. Veritas Vincit — Truth Conquers — not by force of argument alone, but by the transforming power of the risen Christ dwelling within his people.

T.U.L.I.P. (Decretal / 5-Point)U.N.I.T.Y. (Union-Centered / Davenant)
T – Total DepravityU – Universal Sufficiency
Man is dead in sin.Following Davenant at the Synod of Dort, Christ’s atoning work is a genuine and valid remedy for all mankind — not a formal gesture over an empty table, but a real universal provision providing the legal basis for a sincere Gospel offer to every soul. The Gospel call is genuinely extended to all because the provision is genuinely made for all.
U – Unconditional ElectionN – New Creation
God chooses His own.Regeneration is effected solely by the power of the Holy Spirit, producing repentance, faith, and newness of life as its necessary and proper evidence. Election is the sovereign determination that the elect must be conformed to the image of the Son — holiness is the necessary and free fruit of God’s sovereign choice, not its condition or ground. Those in Christ are genuinely new creations; the old has gone, the new has come.
L – Limited AtonementI – Incorporation
The price is particular. We affirm a universal price and a particular Incorporation. Forensic justification is in service of real ontological union with Christ — the benefits of the cross are applied only to those knit to Christ’s Person through Spirit-worked faith, not by human decision or merit, but by sovereign grace alone. Union with Christ is the trunk; justification, adoption, sanctification, and glorification are its branches.
I – Irresistible GraceT – Transforming Presence
A sovereign call.Grace is the actual life of the Spirit entering the soul — the indwelling Christ producing real, observable, and necessary transformation from within. This is transformationist soteriology: we are not merely imputationist, for the same Spirit who declares us righteous necessarily makes us righteous as the free fruit of union with Christ. Transformation necessarily follows justification without contributing to it. The Spirit transforms because He indwells; He indwells because Christ is risen.
P – Perseverance of the SaintsY – Yoked Preservation
A legal guarantee. We are secure because we are yoked to the Head of the Body in vital, Spirit-worked union. Where the Head has ascended, the members cannot be lost — preservation is personal and participatory, not merely forensic. Our security rests not in our grip on Christ but in His grip on us. Love for the brethren, observable righteousness, and newness of life are the necessary and non-optional marks of those thus preserved — for the faith that saves is never alone in the person justified.
